Al Wathba 1 is developed using carbon composite tubing produced in Khalifa University’s labs. The bike was assembled using a bicycle jig, using conventional lug design approach.
Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) provided seed grant of AED 300,000 to Khalifa University to commence R&D activities related to bicycles manufactured using light-weight carbon composites. KU and Strata then worked together to convert the aged prepregs into road bikes. They used computational methods to design and develop tubing for the bikes.
Operations are setup and Khalifa University received regulatory approvals to batch manufacture the bicycle frames.
Tubes were then made using aged prepregs provided by Strata from designs that were developed at Khalifa University. The upcycled tubing were mitered and assembled as KU-Strata bikes. A batch of six bikes were produced that were showcased at the UAE tour.
